Description

We are offering you the opportunity to join a privately owned Quebec-based company specializing in the construction industry as Corporate Controller. Well established for several decades, the organization has experienced significant growth over the years and now operates across several Canadian provinces. It stands out for its entrepreneurial culture, agility, and commitment to continued growth while modernizing its ways of working.

You will report to the Executive Vice President, a highly experienced leader who works closely with operations and is recognized for his entrepreneurial, pragmatic, and results-oriented approach. He provides strong support during the onboarding period and then offers significant autonomy and latitude, particularly valuing ownership and the ability to move initiatives forward effectively. If you are looking for a hands-on role with a real influence on operations, while contributing to the transformation of the finance function and growing long term with an expanding Canadian company, this is an excellent opportunity. This position is primarily office-based, with some flexibility.

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting and financial activities while acting as a business partner to the various branches and senior management. You will oversee month-end closings and the preparation of financial statements, ensuring the reliability of financial information, the completeness of sales and billing, and compliance with reporting deadlines.

You will oversee the accounting team and the full accounting cycle, including bank reconciliations, intercompany transactions, and group consolidation. You will also maintain a critical eye on key operational areas that impact financial results, including payroll, timesheets, and Accounts Payable.

A significant portion of the role will focus on project accounting and work-in-progress (WIP) management. You will review costs and billing by project, analyze WIP, and ensure that materials, labour hours, and other costs are allocated to the appropriate projects. You will be expected to quickly identify projects with significant variances and challenge discrepancies between estimates, actual costs, labour hours, and billing. Projects are generally short-term and range in value from $100,000 to $300,000, with some reaching several million dollars.

You will also play an active role in cash flow management, particularly by promoting timely billing and the effective management of supplier payments. You will work closely with branch managers to help them understand their financial results and the key factors influencing the profitability of their operations.

From a leadership perspective, you will be responsible for supervising, coaching, and developing the accounting team while fostering autonomy and effective day-to-day problem-solving.

Once you have developed a strong understanding of the day-to-day operations, you will become increasingly involved in continuous improvement and the transformation of the finance function. You will contribute to the review of the accounting system, process automation, stronger internal controls, and the exploration of new technologies and artificial intelligence.

This role represents an excellent opportunity for a finance professional looking to work in an entrepreneurial and operational environment, have a tangible impact on project performance, and contribute to the modernization of the finance function.

Profile

You are a CPA with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in financial control and accounting management, ideally gained within an SME or mid-market environment. You have a strong command of the full accounting cycle, including month-end close, financial statement preparation, bank reconciliations, billing, Accounts Payable, payroll, intercompany transactions, and consolidation. Experience in construction, project accounting, job costing, and WIP analysis is considered a strong asset.

Recognized for your hands-on approach, autonomy, and entrepreneurial mindset, you are comfortable getting directly involved in day-to-day operations when needed. Curious and analytical, you seek to understand the story behind the numbers rather than simply ensuring they balance. You are organized, thorough in your follow-ups, and able to effectively manage multiple priorities.

Bilingual in French and English, you are comfortable collaborating with managers across Canada and know how to constructively challenge operations. Experience in process improvement, automation, or system implementation is considered a strong asset. You are looking for an environment that offers significant autonomy and flexibility, where you can make a tangible impact and grow with the company over the long term.
